Eric et Joel Durand St Joseph Cuvee Lautaret
Description: RP-92pts
I was blown away by the 2013 St Joseph Lautaret, and it shows how good this vintage can be from these steep granite slopes. Focused, pure and structured with rocking notes of graphite, smoked meats, licorice, cassis and black raspberry fruit, it has medium to full-bodied richness, excellent concentration, ripe tannin and a great finish. It will need more time to come around than the Les Coteaux, and have 10-15 years of overall longevity.

Lovers of rich, concentrated northern Rhônes that have plenty of classic characters should check out the wines from Eric and Joel Durand, whose estate covers 18 hectares spread between Cornas and Saint Joseph. As I commented last year, the style is quasi-modern, with plenty of destemming and moderate amounts of new oak, but the wines have distinctive characters, plenty of purity, and also age beautifully. While the focus is on their Cornas releases, they make a terrific red and white Saint Joseph.
