Looking for a different white wine? Grüner Veltliner, a grape indigenous to Austria, makes a full-bodied dry wine. While it has a reputation for being simple and mass produced, vintners in Austria are moving toward lower yields and higher ripeness, which creates stunningly intense and concentrated wines. Grüner Veltliner accounts for over 35 percent of Austria's vineyards. This versatile wine is made to be enjoyed young, but can age quite nicely. Last updated 01/21/10.

"Weighing in at exactly 12% alcohol and harvested already in mid-September, Johannes Hirsch’s 2006 Grüner Veltliner #1 displays lentil, herbs, and fresh lime in a juicy, refreshing context that is perfect for every day and for the refrigerator. (Outside of the U.S., this consistently good-value basic Grüner Veltliner with its amusing labels featuring elk – Hirsch – is numbered sequentially, so this 2006 is known as 'Trinkvergnugen #5.')" 87 points. — Wine Advocate
