Our visit to California's arguably best consumer tasting event yields new finds like this one discovered by a participant at the 2010 Loyola Marymount University Wine Classic. The 2007 Smith-Madrone is one example of the unique wines we taste at LMU in Los Angeles.

2005
Ventisquero Queulat Merlot Gran Reserva, Maipo Valley, Chile Not
all Merlot is created equal. This offering from Maipo Valley in Southern
Chile is a classy Merlot full of flavor with aromas of black cherries and
plum. With a wonderful structure and friendly tannins, this is not a wimpy
wine. The Queulat wines of Ventisquero are in a class by themselves. Be
sure to try the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmeniere and Sauvignon Blanc, too.
They're all on sale for $17.99. |
2005
Château Pesquié Terrasses, Ventoux, Rhône Valley Vineyards
This is a great wine for your special dinner of grilled or roasted meats.
This blend of 70 percent Grenache and 30 percent Syrah from the southern
Rhone Valley is medium- to full-bodied with elegant tannins, round cherry
and black current notes and a spicy. This wine can be enhanced by a little
time and air. The terroir is similar to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but at $15.99
a bottle, the wine doesn't carry a similar price tag.

Shinas Estate The Verdict Cabernet Sauvignon, Victoria, Australia
This is a full-throttle 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the same producer
who crafted the Guilty Shiraz and the Innocent Viognier. . The result is
big on fruit characteristics particularly if you like Cabernet Sauvignon.
No professional rating yet found but to my palate this down under Cabernet
Sauvignon from Southeastern Australia merits at least 89 points and is $19.99.

Estancia Meritage Paso Robles Reserve (Reg. $28.99/Sale $25.99)
The style of the 2005 is very attractive. A blend of 56 percent Cabernet
Sauvignon, 32 percent Merlot, 9 percent Petit Verdot and 3 percent Malbec,
this wine is very approachable now. Whether it's a formal dinner party or
just something above the standard Tuesday night Cabernet Sauvignon, the
Estancia red blend is a versatile wine that will marry many types of foods
in addition to traditional chicken and pasta dishes. |

Seghesio Sangiovese Alexander Valley ($23.99)
Fruit for this wine came from some of the oldest Sangiovese planted in California,
nearly 100 year-old vines! We are familiar with Seghesio for Zin but wait
until you try their Cal-Italian variety. Earlier this year when Pete Seghesio
visited our store we found out that they also make excellent Sangiovese!
This California red from Sonoma's Alexander Valley is full-bodied and fruit-driven.

Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah Walla Walla (Reg. $50.99/Sale $48.99)
From Washington-State comes this remarkable find! If you appreciate classic
Bordeaux-style wines then look no further than this beauty! It is a blend
of 59 percent Merlot, 36 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Petit Verdot
from Walla Walla. The Wine Spectator rated this 3,000 case production wine
91-pts and encourages you to drink it between now and 2013. |
'07
Alamos Malbec Mendoza ($11.99)
There is much to like about this medium-bodied red from Argentina
- "the 2007 shows even more fruit, complexity and flavor than the
2006" says Nevres. The Wine Spectator calls the wine a 'Best Buy'
and Wine Advocate rates this wine 87 pts. But trust us on this one for
the money it's hard to beat!

Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio ($19.99)
If you're a fan of good Italian Pinot Grigio then look no further!! Refreshing,
clean with citrusy notes. Medium to full-bodied - very well-balanced, a
perfect example of classic Tuscan pinot grigio. Enjoyable by itself or pair
it with fish and pasta. |
