Conquistadors planted the first vineyards in Chile five centuries ago after discovering the climate mirrored the Mediterranean areas of their homeland. Sporting a boldly aromatic nose of sweet black raspberries as well as horse leather, the Big Tattoo Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon blend is medium-bodied and fruit forward. "The Cuvee Alexandre series are single vineyard selections named after proprietor Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. The 2005 Merlot “Cuvee Alexandre – Apalta Vineyard" has 15% Carmenere in the blend. Purple-colored, it has an attractive nose of black currant, blueberry, vanilla, and clove. The wine has good weight on the palate with layers of black fruits and a firm structure. Rated 88 by Wine Enthusiast and selected as a Best Buy. This Merlot was aged six months in small French oak barrels. It has red fruit flavors and intense aromas and a lush texture. It is well structured and has a spicy finish. The founded of the winery, Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle, is the great granddaughter of the creator of the French liqueur Grand Marnier.
